Communication, Art and Visual Culture (ArtiCom) is a research group recognized by the Universitat Politècnica de València(UPV) and attached to the Department of Audiovisual Communication, Documentation and Art History. The group is formed by more than fifteen professors and researchers, being Nuria Ramón its responsible researcher. Its main purpose is the analysis of the forms of communication and artistic expression and how these are linked to society. Among its objectives is to provide answers to the following questions: how visual culture is generated, what kind of message it intends to convey, how these are consumed and how, finally, this process can encourage social change. There are three main lines of research:

  • Visual culture: aesthetics and politics. Responsible: Dr. Miguel Corella. The purpose of this line of research focuses on the study of the functions of art in politics, institutions and social movements. On the other hand, it aims to evaluate the management and impact of cultural institutions and activities. Among the topics to be studied are: visual culture; art, aesthetics, politics and social movements; art and identity; museology and exhibition project management; cultural institutions and activities; and the application of technologies in cultural institutions.
  • CINEA (Cinema, Research and Artistic Experimentation). Professor in charge: Dr. Javier Moral. The purpose of this line of research is based on a double complementary movement of intensive and extensive character with respect to the audiovisual phenomenon. Intensive because it proposes the analysis of the formal and stylistic features of audiovisual artifacts in their aesthetic singularity. Extensive because it seeks to delve into the possible relationships between audiovisual artifacts that, being part of the same cultural field or being located in adjacent fields, establish links of correlation and equivalence. In short, it is a matter of understanding audiovisual phenomena in their double condition: as objects defined by formal rules that govern a specific aesthetic universe and, at the same time, as objects in dialogue with other surrounding objects. Some of the main conceptual and thematic lines worked on have to do with the study and development of audiovisual practices from an interdisciplinary perspective, combining the critical analysis of cinema with the exploration of contemporary artistic languages. Likewise, a deepening of the aesthetic history of cinema is proposed, including phenomena such as animated cinema, new immersive media, or television seriality. CINEA has a website where its main proposals and research results are collected: cinea.webs.upv.es
  • Communication and artistic expression in Western Culture. From the techniques and procedures of the artists. Coordinator: Dr. Joan Aliaga Morell. The purpose of this line of research focuses on the analysis of the forms of communication and artistic expression of European art in medieval and modern times and how these are linked to society. The work is approached from the profile of the art historian, with the help of both scientific analysis of materials and diagnostic techniques, from the analysis of the digital image of broad spectrum. The aim is to reveal the necessary information that allows a correct interpretation of the techniques and procedures used by the artists in the creative process of the works of art. At the same time, we study the data of the period by working in the main historical archives, where we frequently exhume unpublished documents. Among the priority themes of this line of research we focus on the search for connections between master painters and miniaturists, the study of the book as an artistic object. The work of art exhibited in the museum dialogues with contemporary society, we deal with the study of the forms of communication from the Museums Chair (GVA-UPV).
  • Aesthetics of the audiovisual. Some of the thematic lines worked on are: audiovisual aesthetics, cinema and art, aesthetic history of cinema, aesthetic forms of new media, expanded cinema, ways of image circulation, relations between cognitive and aesthetic values in serial narration, animation aesthetics, etc.
